50 stores in this directory sell tallisos and tzitzis. Most are general Judaica retailers; others are STaM specialists, booksellers and a few artists. Every listing links to the store's own site, and each fact on it comes from a dated source.
What to look for
Know your custom first. In many Eastern European Ashkenazi communities, men begin wearing a tallis gadol after marriage, customarily a gift from the bride or her family. Sephardim and Western European Ashkenazim generally start from bar mitzvah or earlier.[1] If the tallis is a gift, ask before you buy.
Wool is the standard choice. The Torah obligation clearly applies to wool or linen garments. Ashkenazi poskim hold that other fabrics are included too, but some recommend wool or linen to satisfy all opinions.[2] Silk and cotton are also used. Synthetic fabrics are debated, so ask your rav.
The strings are the mitzvah. Tzitzis strings must be spun lishmah, for the sake of the mitzvah.[3] You can't see that by looking, so buy from a seller you trust or choose strings with a recognized kosher certification.
Size labels vary. Compare actual measurements rather than size numbers between brands. Very narrow, scarf-style tallisos may fall below the halachic minimum size.[2]
Which kind of store
- General Judaica retailers stock many sizes and styles, plus tallis bags and tallis katan.
- STaM specialists and sofrim in this category carry some tallis and tzitzis items; ask whether they sell strings or tie tzitzis.
- Custom work: use the Custom orders and Personalization filters for embroidered bags or atarahs, then confirm with the store.
Questions to ask the store
- What is the fabric content?
- Who made the strings, and what certification do they carry?
- What are the actual dimensions, and can I try it on?
- Can you embroider a name on the bag, and how long does that take?
Timing
For a bar mitzvah or a wedding, order a month or more ahead, especially for embroidery or a custom atarah, and ask the store for its current turnaround. Boys outgrow a tallis katan quickly, so buy with some room.
